Special Presentation: Dick Edwards, author of “Mom, Dad…Can We Talk?”

Dick Edwards is the author of Mom, Dad… Can We Talk?: Insight and Perspectives to Help Us Do What’s Best for Our Aging ParentsHe has extensive experience working with older adults and their families, including twenty years as administrator of Charter House, a retirement community affiliated with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  While at the Mayo Clinic, Dick conducted research on the question “Who does better at the business of growing older?”

In his March 7th talk “Mom, Dad… Can We Talk?: Family Conversations That Make a Difference as Our Parents Grow Older,” visiting expert Dick Edwards will offer insight on how to have courageous conversations with aging parents.

As parents age, adult children find themselves confronting many questions, from “How long should Mom and Dad stay in the house?” to “How do we know whether it’s time for Dad to stop driving?”.  These topics can be difficult to broach with parents, but it’s vital that families are able to talk about issues related to aging.

Dick has traveled the country and spoken to over 100 audiences of adult children and senior living professionals. He has also consulted in the US, Malaysia, Norway and Ireland.  His second book, My Grandparent: A Life & Times Journal for Grandchildren of All Ages (2013), builds on the special bond between grandparent and grandchild to capture family history and stories that only a grandparent can tell.

Dick earned his Baccalaureate from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and his Master’s from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He and his wife Pat have three adult children and six grandchildren.
